LAAD 2017: IVECO adds new member to the Guarani family of armored vehicles

A new member of the VBTP-MR Guarani Family of armored vehicles appeared at the LAAD 2017 defense and security exhibition. Showcased on Iveco's booth was the latest vehicle delivered to the Brazilian Army, a 6x6 version fitted with a new modular add-on armour kit and the Remax remote controlled weapon station produced by the Brazilian company Ares.

Ares' Remax turret is a remote controlled weapon station, fully stabilized, for 12.7 mm and 7.62 mm machine guns, designed under the requirements of the Brazilian Army. It features EO/IR optical systems, a laser rangefinder, as well as four 76mm smoke grenade launchers.

The Brazilian Army has signed a contract worth about €2.5 billion with Iveco for supplying VBTP-MR armoured personnel carriers to replace the ageing EE-11 Urutu armoured vehicle employed today by the Brazilian armed forces.

The Guarani Project was created with the objective of reconciling mobility and mission safety in the most diverse terrains. It consists of the development of combat vehicles on the 4x4, 6x6 and 8x8 platforms, which will not only be powerful for military attack operations, but will also represent a qualitative leap forward in defense, patrolling, and peace missions.

Planned to withstand different climates and terrains, the Guarani Family of armored vehicles was developed for rapid displacement, as well as crossings rivers and streams.

With a capacity for 11 men, the armored vehicles have a series of technological innovations, such as a low thermal and radar signature, which makes it difficult to locate them by the enemy. Aiming for greater security for its users, the Guarani Family also has GPS navigation, night vision, and armored protection against incendiary armor piercing ammunition.

With all its technology developed by the Department of Science and Technology (DCT) and the Iveco company, the so-called Guarani Armored Vehicle, 6x6 category, will have more than ten types of versions, such as mortar (to be used by Infantry and Cavalry weapons), communications, workshop, ambulance, engineering, and chemical and nuclear defense, among others.

This factor demonstrates the versatility of the equipment and its wide range of use with Ground Forces. In this category, at least 203 units were delivered to military organizations across the country. In addition, another 60 have already been produced and are awaiting distribution.

The heaviest category of the 8x8 armored family on wheels is under development by DCT engineers. The light 4x4 multitasking vehicle is being purchased. By the end of the project, the Army will have more than 3,000 vehicles divided among the three categories.

LAAD 2017: Avibras pushes new 4x4

A prototype 4x4 armoured vehicle from Brazilian manufacturer Avibras has been displayed at LAAD for the first time.
The Guara has a unique four wheeled steering system that allows the driver to turn the wheels on both the front and rear axles.
A spokesperson for the company told Shephard that this feature is to allow for better mobility in built up urban areas with high density populations and it is being targeted at the Brazilian Army and homeland security forces.
Guara has Stanag level 3 armour protection and the variant on display has space for five soldiers and equipment with a GVW of 10t and a payload capacity of 2.5t. The spokesperson said the vehicle is a proof of concept effort and the company is in talks with the Brazilian Army and homeland security force to develop the requirement.
The plan is to develop a new prototype once the requirements are set that can be used for testing, but mobility and armour protection were stated as the two main priorities for the vehicle. Avibras wants to get an official programme started up.
There are several different variants on offer and the vehicle can be adapted to be a troop transport, a reconnaissance vehicle, C2 post or other type.
The spokesperson said that an earlier prototype vehicle was sent to Haiti as a part of Brazil's contribution to the UN relief effort there to negotiate the ruins of the capital Port-au-Prince and provide support in areas that were difficult to access.
This latest Guara prototype is 5.6m long and 2.4m wide with a height of 2.2m. The powertrain consists of a Cummins engine and Allison transmission. Anti-mine protection is up to Stanag level 2b and has side IED protection up to 50kg of TNT.
According to the spokesperson, the advantage of Avibras is that the company can not only build the vehicle but do the integration of all the subsystems as well.

LAAD 2017: Urutu upgrades edge forward

The Brazilian Army programme to upgrade its EE-11 Urutu 6x6 APC is continuing to move forward albeit slowly.
However, at LAAD 2017, the vehicle on display was fitted with a new manned turret from Singapore Technologies' Brazilian subsidiary, Technicae, which has been facilitating the work on this project.
The new cupola has been developed in response to a Brazilian Army requirement, which has yet to be approved, but a spokesperson from the company told Shephard that it was an example of a transfer of technology to Brazil from Singapore.
It was stressed that should Technicae be selected it would be able to build, integrate and weaponise the turret in Brazil.
Technicae has been working on the upgrade to the Urutu and the EE-9 Cascavel vehicle under Project Phoenix for a decade and it will continue until 2035 when the new Guarani family of vehicles has entered service to completely replace both types.
The Brazilian Army has been awarding contracts to Technicae to upgrade small numbers of Urutu and Cascavel vehicles on a yearly basis, usually for 15-20 vehicles at a value of around $10 million. The company is working on Cascavels but is waiting for an order to do more work on another batch of Urutus.
These are not huge amounts but it means that the vehicles will get a new Mercedes Benz engine with 200hp, automatic Allison SP 3000 tranmission, breaks, power pack, air conditioning, 24V electrical systems and optical systems.
The spokesperson said that the upgrade solution aimed to address two issues: firstly the operational support and secondly the supply chain. They added that the vehicles are so old that many of the parts are no longer produced. He continued that the army gives the requirement and Technicae will find the solution that can be easily found on the market and can be supported long-term.
Technicae has a facility in Brasilia and also works at a Brazilian Army facility, AGSP, in Sao Paulo where it completes the upgrade work.

LAAD 2017: Avionics hopes for UAS expansion

Avionics Services is aiming to increase the presence of their Caçador UAV in South America at LAAD 2017.
Caçador is based on Israel Aerospace Industries' (IAI) Heron-1 UAV and is a result of a development partnership between the two companies.
Joao Batista Vernini, CEO and president at Avionics Services, explained to Shephard that the Caçador UAV was largely made from Brazilian components.
'We have 60 to 65% Brazilian content on the unit, this means we can classify [the UAV] as a product made in Brazil by the Minister of Defence,' he said.
'We have three units flying in Brazil. Two are flying with the federal police patrolling the borders in the south of Brazil.'
Further to a recent flight test campaign, the UAV has received approval from the Brazilian Ministry of Defence as a strategic defence product. A facility in the Sao Paolo region is ready to produce the UAV, which has been present in the Brazilian market for two years.
'We have the freedom to offer the Caçador in the South American market as well as for some other countries that have no political restrictions,' Vernini said.
The key capabilities of the UAV are 1.2t maximum take-off weight with an endurance of 40 hours. The ceiling operation of the UAV is 30,000ft.
The UAV, Vernini explained, is able to conduct many operations including environmental, ship control and pipeline monitoring missions and is not just exclusive to border patrol.
Caçador has the capacity to be open to various applications through plug and play capability from EO/IR to night vision technologies.

LAAD 2017: Pistol to grip South America

srael Weapon Industries (IWI) has showcased its polymer-frame Jericho pistol at LAAD 2017.
The company sees this weapon as the next-generation of pistol for military and civil operators.
The polymer-frame Jericho, which is available in three colour options, was a result of customer feedback that stressed the need for back strips on the pre-existing polymer version – it is also available in three different sizes. A metal version of the Jericho is also available.
Its predecessor is utilised by the Israeli police among other militaries and law enforcement agencies around the world. Meanwhile, the current polymer version has also proven popular within the commercial market due to its lightness.
The new model of Jericho is available in three calibres: 9mm, .40S&W and .45ACP. In addition, there is an absence of finger grooves although a rough grip texture aids the grip of the pistol for the operator.
Eyal Navarro, marketing director at IWI, told Shephard that the pistol's capabilities remained the same as the previous version but with the enhanced polymer feature the pistol would be simpler to use.
'We have changed the texture of the outside. The mechanism is still the same… Now, we have a picatinny rail, back strips and it can be adjusted for small or big hands so it is available in three sizes – it is the most combat proven pistol,' Navarro explained.
He continued that within South America, the company has seen a high demand for pistols whether it is for law enforcement agencies or military.
'The idea is if the client wants an old version we will do it. However, we are suggesting the upgrade to customers [of the new polymer version] of the Jericho,' he added.
