General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) is showing its latest Light Armoured Vehicle 700 (LAV 700) for the first time – the most advanced vehicle in its class to have been developed by the company.
This is being shown in the command post (CP) configuration and is one of many versions currently inproduction for an unidentified export customer, which is believed to be Saudi Arabia. The LAV 700 is a further development of the LAV 6 developed to meet the requirements of the Canadian Army.

All-seeing strike platform

In April this year a state-of-the-art aircraft factory at Wonderboom, South Africa, is scheduled to begin production of the AHRLAC ISR (intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance) aircraft, which has been developed as a versatile, low-cost platform for a range of military, security and other applications. Here at IDEX Paramount Group (Stand 12-C20) is highlighting the Mwari, an armed version of the AHRLAC offering an integrated precision strike and ISR capability.

To the Shona people of southern Africa the Mwari is an “all-seeing being”. The aircraft of the same name has been developed by Paramount as a highly advanced two-seat platform that can conduct ISR missions from high altitudes and long stand-off ranges through the use of sophisticated electro-optic and electronic intelligence sensors.

In addition, the aircraft also has the agility and robustness to conduct low-level patrols for extended periods.

An integrated avionics system provides a ‘plug-and-play’ environment that caters for the easy and rapid integration of different capabilities.

The aircraft has a conformal mission bay beneath the stepped cockpit offering a considerable internal volume for the carriage of a range of equipment, and has a total of 26 hardpoints available for weapons, pods, communications and defensive systems.

Through the integrated mission systems and large cockpit screens the crew is able to build and maintain a high level of situational awareness, and through an extensive communications suite the Mwari can act as an on-scene command centre for a range of operations and tasks. Drawing on elements from both fixed-wing aircraft and attack helicopters, the design of the aircraft offers both crew an exceptional outside view, and the cockpit is fully compatible with night vision devices.

Short/rough-field capability allows the Mwari to operate from remote and austere strips. The Mwari is able to undertake missions over long endurances, and it is ideal for missions where persistence is a key attribute, such as border and maritime patrol, internal security, intelligence-gathering, disaster management and policing.

Distinguishing the Mwari from other AHRLAC-based configurations is the ability of the aircraft to engage targets. Mwari is available with a range of weapon types, with the focus on precision engagement through weapons that leverage the advantages of the aircraft’s sophisticated system to deliver precision effects with the minimum of collateral damage, such as the Denel Mokopa missile.

Paramount Group is undertaking the conversion of the baseline AHRLAC airframe to Mwari configuration at its own facility. In addition to Paramount’s ITAR-free weaponisation programme, Boeing is separately developing an integrated light strike/ISR mission system for the AHRLAC under a partnership agreement announced last year.

TACMS undergoes further testing

Lockheed Martin has conducted a further test firing of a modernised Tactical Missile System (TACMS).
The early February tests were undertaken at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, and saw the missile fired from the High-Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) and strike its target at a distance of more than 200 km.
This latest test follows a firing conducted in December 2016, where a target was hit at a distance of 71 km. These firings represent the third and fourth instances to date, all of which have been successful and met their goals, according to Scott Greene, vice-president of precision fires and combat manoeuvre systems at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control.

IDEX 2017: Iraq takes delivery of Textron Commandos

The Iraqi Federal Police is currently in the process of receiving the Textron Commando Select armoured vehicles that were ordered last year, Jonathan Dalrymple, vice president for business development at Textron's Marine and Land Systems division, told Jane's at the IDEX show in Abu Dhabi.

"We are delivering tranches of vehicles; the first got there about two months ago and went straight to the front," he said.
The Iraqi Federal Police has become an increasingly heavily armed force that is playing a major role in the operation to retake the northern city of Mosul from the Islamic State militant group. It has been using the earlier Commando Armoured Security Vehicle (ASV) variant since 2004, when it received the first of more than 300 vehicles.
The new vehicles are being built under a USD66 million contract announced by the US Department of Defense in April 2016. This covered 60 Commando Selects for Iraq and another 60 for Colombia, but Dalrymple said the Iraqis will actually receive 58 as two have been diverted to Colombia.
He said the new vehicles will replace losses suffered by Federal Police and all them will be delivered with the 40/50 turret, each armed with an automatic grenade launcher and heavy machine gun, but Iraq has also requested another 300 Selects, including those fitted with a CMI turret with a 90 mm low-pressure gun, a variant that has already been ordered by the Afghan army. Textron hopes the Iraqi request will be approved by the US government in the coming months.
Dalrymple outlined the advantages of the Select over the ASV, which is no longer in production. To increase its survivability when hit by mines or large improvised explosive devices, the vehicle has been raised, the hull redesigned to give it more of a V-shape, add-on belly armour is an option, the wheels have been moved further from the centreline, the wheel arches have been redesigned to help direct the blast outwards, and the fuel tanks now bolt on to the front so they are blown off away from the vehicle.

China offers S-26 conventional submarine with Stirling engine AIP

The China Shipbuilding and Offshore International Corporation (CSOC) used the IDEX show in Abu Dhabi to market its S-26 conventional submarine for the first time with what it calls a "unique" version of the Stirling cycle engine air-independent propulsion (AIP) system.
Stirling cycle AIP systems use liquid oxygen and diesel fuel to power submarine electrical generators and extend submerged endurance.
A Stirling AIP has long been thought to equip the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) Type 039B Yuan-class submarine, which forms the basis for the S-26 export variant.
A submarine model on display at IDEX and a new brochure clearly showed the S-26 has a large liquid oxygen tank to support its Stirling engine AIP.
CSOC officials would not provide an estimate of the submerged endurance for the S-26 model on display, saying it could be tailored to customer requirements.
Another industry source at IDEX familiar with AIP systems said that they doubted that the Chinese Stirling AIP, as configured, would provide submerged endurance for a week.
A CSOC brochure notes that its 2,660 ton displacement 'Conventional Submarine' has a length of 79.5 m, a beam of 8.6 m, maximum speed of 18 kt, a range of 8,000 n miles at 4 kt, and a maximum dive depth of 300 m.

China unveils MSS-01 Mobile Submarine Simulator and decoy

The China Shipbuilding and Offshore International Corporation (CSOC) used the 2017 IDEX show in Abu Dhabi to reveal its new MSS-01 Mobile Submarine Simulator.
The simulator, which also serves as a decoy, is in service with the Chinese navy according to a company official.
The MSS-1 is described as a "self-propelled underwater acoustic countermeasure designed for ASW [anti-submarine warfare] engagement and training scenarios". It uses "high fidelity simulation of submarine radiated noise" and "echo repeat while receiving" it can deceive "sonar, acoustic homing torpedoes, and wire-guided acoustic homing torpedoes".
With a length of 5,500 mm, a 533.4 mm diameter, and a weight of 1,100 kg, it is launched from a torpedo tube and can be recovered when in training mode. It has a speed of 10-15 kt, an operating depth of 10-300 m, and an endurance of 100 minutes at 10 kt or 45 minutes at 15 kt.

IDEX 2017: Bahrain selects GCS-200 UGV

Global Clearance Solutions' GCS-200 unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) will be supplied to Bahrain as the launch customer for the platform, a company official has revealed.
Speaking to Jane's at IDEX 2017 in Abu Dhabi where the GCS-200 was unveiled, Global Clearance Solutions' head of marketing and communications, Andreas Mikota, said a single system will be delivered shortly.
The launch of the GCS-200 follows that of the smaller GCS-100 in late 2016.
The GCS-200 is a larger and more rugged design, featuring varying levels of armour protection from 8 mm to 20 mm in thickness and a v-shaped hull to help deflect blasts on the underside of the vehicle. The system is intended to provide counter-improvised explosive device (C-IED) and demining capabilities.

MBDA receives UAE contract for additional Marte Mk 2/N missiles

European missile company MBDA has secured a follow-on order from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the supply of additional Marte Mk 2/N anti-ship missiles to the UAE Naval Forces.
At the same time, the company has released a first photograph of a Marte Mk 2/N missile being fired from a Turkmenistan Border Guard patrol vessel. MBDA has never publicly disclosed the sale to Turkmenistan, known internally as the 'Tetris' project.
Developed by MBDA Italia as a ship-launched derivative of the air-launched Marte Mk 2/S missile, Marte Mk 2/N is able to strike targets at ranges in excess of 30 km. The missile flies a fire-and-forget sea-skimming profile using mid-course inertial guidance and radar homing.
The UAE placed its original contract for Marte Mk 2/N in 2009. The system equips 12 27 m Ghannatha II fast craft; each ship system installation comprises four box launchers and missiles, together with a fire-control system.
The order for additional missiles was announced by the UAE General Headquarters (GHQ) on 19 February, and confirmed by MBDA the following day. While the company has not put a value on the contract, GHQ has quoted a figure of AED343.8 million (USD 93.6 million).
In the photo release accompanying its press statement, MBDA showed a first picture of a Marte Mk 2/N missile being launched from a Turkmenistan Border Guard P-1200 patrol boat. The same image also revealed the installation of MBDA's SIMBAD-RC self-defence missile system on the vessel.

Advanced F-16 looks to the Gulf IDEX17D4

Lockheed Martin is marketing the latest version of the F-16, the Block 70, as both the F-16V upgrade and as a new-build aircraft. Having already signed up South Korea and Taiwan for the F-16V upgrade, which has also been selected by Singapore, Lockheed Martin is hoping that Bahrain may be the next customer for the advanced F-16.
Bahrain currently operates 20 F-16C/D Block 40 aircraft, and has sought a follow-on batch of aircraft for some time. This was held up by US congressional approval issues, but with the change of President it is expected that this approval will be forthcoming. As well as upgrading its current aircraft to the Block 70 standard, Bahrain is also seeking between 16 and 19 new-build machines.
The F-16V/Block 70 is the latest iteration of the much-developed fighter. The principal change is the inclusion of the APG-83 AESA (active electronically scanned antenna) radar, which offers significantly improved operational effectiveness as well as reduced maintenance requirements. New cockpit display and avionics technologies are included, some of which have been transferred across from the F-35 programme.
Here in the UAE, the Air Force and Air Defence has been flying the Block 60 F-16E/F since 2004, and it has performed well in various combat operations. Lockheed Martin is working hard through the AMMROC maintenance, repair and overhaul company that supports the fleet to maintain fleet availability, which has come under pressure due to the increased operational tempo of recent times. The F-16 Block 60 is expected to serve with the UAE until at least 2030 or even 2040. It also has an AESA radar in the form of the APG-80.
Lockheed Martin is exploring many other avenues for new sales and upgrades, including a programme to bring 30 Egyptian air force Block 15 aircraft up to Block 50 standard for commonality with the rest of the fleet. Regarding new-build aircraft, Lockheed Martin’s current order commitments are due to be completed around the end of the year with the delivery of the last of Iraq’s 36 aircraft.

Archangel on watch

In March, the UAE is due to take delivery of the 24th and last Iomax Archangel aircraft from its current order. The final machine is already flying at Iomax’s facility in the USA, while the aircraft creating a buzz of excitement in the static display here at IDEX (Stand CP-205) is the penultimate aircraft.
Iomax delivered the first of the Archangels to the UAE in June 2015, around six months after receiving an order.
Based on the Thrush S2R-660 airframe, the Archangel builds on the experience from the earlier Iomax Border Patrol Aircraft that used the Air Tractor AT-802 ag-plane airframe. An initial 10 aircraft were produced for the UAE in Block 1 configuration with ISR capability, followed by 14 Block 2 aircraft with heavier payloads and additional stores options. Now that the definitive Block 3 Archangel aircraft has been delivered, some of the earlier aircraft are being transferred to other operators, with six going to Jordan and 12 to Egypt.
In creating the Archangel, Iomax has made numerous modifications compared with the Block 1/2, such as moving the two-person cockpit forward and enlarging the tail surfaces to cater for operations in the thinner air encountered at higher altitudes.
Other changes include redesigned wingtips and wingroots, and wider spacing of the underwing stores pylons to cater for dual-launcher rails.
The PT6A-67F turboprop is fitted with a new propeller from MT-Propeller, which features five scimitar-shaped blades for very quiet operations.
From an operator’s perspective, the Archangel offers a full persistent ISR capability in a platform that also has the ability to prosecute targets with precision. Traditionally these capabilities would require two dedicated types, one for ISR and one for attack, but the Archangel can perform both roles effectively. At an operating cost of around $1,000 per hour, the aircraft is extremely cost-effective.
Its ag-plane origins mean the Archangel can operate fully loaded from short, rough strips – its design keeping sensors and key systems out of the way of potential foreign object damage. The aircraft can quickly be disassembled for transport by aircraft such as the Boeing C-17.
Iomax has installed a ‘plug-and-play’ integrated mission system that allows it to carry virtually any store, weapon or system that uses a 14in NATO-standard lug spacing.

IDEX 2017: Chinese Navy to acquire new trimaran hull frigate

The China Shipbuilding Trading Corporation (CSSC) has revealed a new trimaran-hulled frigate concept at the IDEX show held in Abu Dhabi, telling Jane's that a version was being built for China's People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN).

The specifications provided by CSSC for the trimaran vessel state that it displaces 2,450 tonnes, has a length of 142 m, a width of 32.6 m, a cruising speed of 25 kt, and an endurance of 30 days. A CSSC official added that its top speed is between 30-35 kt and that it has a crew of more than 100.
CSSC officials said the vessel uses diesel engines that power a "marine electric propulsion system" that in turn drive three pump jets. It does not have a secondary propeller propulsion system.
Although lighter than China's Type 054A frigate, the trimaran carries a similar armament of one 76 mm main gun, vertical launch tubes for 16 or 32 missiles, eight anti-ship missile launchers, two close-in weapon systems, and hangar space for two helicopters.
CSSC also revealed a concept for a 700 tonne derivative of the PLAN's Type 022 catamaran fast attack craft (FAC). It is armed with a 76 mm gun and four anti-ship missile launchers. CSSC officials said the PLAN has so far shown no interest in this version and there are no plans to build it.

IDEX 2017: MSPV confirms large Egyptian order

The Dubai-based company Minerva Special Purpose Vehicles (MSPV) confirmed during IDEX 2017 held in Abu Dhabi that it is building large numbers of Panthera T6 light armoured vehicles for Egypt.
The Panthera T6 was first seen in May 2014 during an Egyptian military parade. Later that year the Arabic-language Security and Defence Arabia website published an article quoting the executive director of the Egyptian company Eagles Defence International Systems (EDIS) as saying it was producing the Panthera T6, as well as the larger members of the Panthera family: the S10 and K10CMD.
Engineer Mohamed Emad el-Kabbany, MSPV's assistant manager for sales and business development, told Jane's at IDEX that EDIS is the company's Egyptian agent. He said he could not reveal exactly how many vehicles were ordered by Egypt, but it is in the region of 2,000-3,000 Panthera T6 three-door vehicles for both the Egyptian Army and National Police.
The T6 is a Toyota Land Cruiser 79-series vehicle that has had its shell removed and a new armoured body fitted, making it an affordable option. The three door version has seats for six personnel in the back in addition to the two up front and can be armed with a machine gun in a ring-mount.
The vehicle has been seen in the Sinai Peninsula, where the Egyptian Army is trying to suppress the local branch of the Islamic State militant group.
Despite this challenging operational environment, MSPV has received "no big complaints" about the vehicle from the Egyptians, according to Kabbany, who noted that the T6's relatively small size is an advantage in certain tactical situations.

China's FT-12 glide bomb gets rocket booster

China's rocket-boosted precision-guided glide bomb, the Fei Teng FT-12, was revealed at the IDEX show in Abu Dhabi by China Aerospace Long-March International Trade Co, Ltd (ALIT), the marketing arm of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC).
While the existence of an FT-12 glide bomb has been previously reported, this is the first time that it has been clearly stated that it is rocket-boosted.
An ALIT official told Jane's at IDEX said this latest FT-12 variant was completed about one year ago and that a "Chinese customer" has only purchased a small quantity.
Looking to add value to their precision-guided bomb series, designers from the China Academy of Launch Technology added a "5-10 kg" rocket motor to the FT-12, according to an ALIT official.
An ALIT brochure states that a release velocity of 600-1,000 km/h, which gives the 700 kg FT-12 a maximum range of 150 km. This figure, however, would depend on the size of the rocket booster and launch altitude.
ALIT states that the FT-12 can attack fixed targets with a circular error probability (CEP) of 20 m using a GPS/INS guidance system
