Leonardo to provide its PicoSAR AESA radar for the French Army's Patroller UAVS

Leonardo has been selected, after an international competition, by Safran Electronics & Defense to provide the PicoSAR AESA (E-Scan) radar for its Patroller UAV, the Italian company announced yesterday at IDEX 2017 in Abu Dhabi. The radars will be used by the French Forces, which selected the Patroller in April 2016

The multi-million Euro contract will see Leonardo provide a number of radars and spares, which will be used for long-range, over-land surveillance missions. First deliveries are expected in 2017 and Leonardo is working closely with Safran for the satisfaction of the French Forces.

Leonardo’s PicoSAR was selected because, in addition to meeting a number of demanding technical requirements, the company took an open and collaborative approach to working with Safran, ensuring that the radar worked perfectly with the Patroller’s mission system and was a fit for the French Forces needs. Compliant with the needs of the French Army, PicoSAR will be used to detect moving land-based targets and collect imagery of the ground with the use of the sensor’s synthetic aperture radar (SAR) mode. PicoSAR offers a high performance over weight ratio and is able to produce SAR imagery in both ‘strip’ and ‘spot’ modes, as well as collecting ground moving target indication (GMTI) data.

PicoSAR features an advanced AESA capability and is ideally suited for UAVs. Leonardo has demonstrated the radar’s flexibility by flying it on more than 10 different platforms. UK-designed and manufactured, PicoSAR has been flown in Oceania, the Far East, the Middle East, Europe, North Africa, North America and South America and has been acquired by more than 10 different customers. PicoSAR is part of Leonardo’s extensive portfolio of airborne radars that include best-in-class M-Scan (mechanically-scanning) and E-scan (electronically scanning) systems designed, manufactured and supported by Leonardo Airborne and Space Systems division.

Rheinmetall 120mm ammunition technology remains commensurate to the threat

The first potential customers for this approach are Leopard 2 user nations interested in upgrading parts of their fleet with an enhanced-performance L55 barrel. No later than 2018, Rheinmetall intends to roll out an improved version of the 120mm L55 tank gun (working title: L55A1), which, coupled with the latest generation of KE ammunition, will be significantly more effective against modern protection systems. If required, a technically similar solution could be made available for upgrading the standard L44 barrel to L44A1 status.

Besides high-performance kinetic energy rounds, Rheinmetall supplies time-delay tank ammunition. Known as the 120 mm x 570 High Explosive (HE) Temp. DM11, this round is programmed after loading. The system modification necessary for this (a programming kit) can be readily integrated into any armoured fighting vehicle equipped with a 120mm smoothbore gun and a modern fire control unit.

The ammunition can be used in three different fuse modes:

- Impact fuse mode/point detonation, PD); here the warhead detonates in the target medium in order to produce major breaches;

- Point detonation with delay, PDwD); in this case the warhead detonates only after penetrating the target envelop;

- Programmable airburst mode (AB); here – at a range of up to 5,000 metres – the warhead detonates in front of and above the designated location for maximum effectiveness against area targets, anti-tank positions etc.

Referring to it as the “Multi Purpose (MP) DM11”, the US Marine Corps uses the DM11 primarily for engaging unarmoured and semi-hard targets in asymmetric warfare scenarios. The German Bundeswehr has introduced the “120mm HE Temp. DM11” as its new standard HE round. A number of other Leopard 2 user nations are currently taking delivery of initial stocks of the DM11, the world’s most advanced and effective HE ammunition.

IDEX 2017: Rheinmetall demonstrates Gladius Future Soldier System capabilities

From individual components to integrated systems based on operational requirements and doctrines, Rheinmetall offers flexible and scalable technology, a wide variety of command and control and display solutions, different levels of integration as well as variable vehicle integration, including Rheinmetall or third-party hardware and software.

Rheinmetall Defence has longstanding experience and expertise in networked-enabled operations and system integration. In particular, the Group’s ability to develop seamless C2 system architectures based on international standards – from the individual rifleman up to Battalion-level command posts – is essential for implementing soldier modernization programmes.

Advanced technologies make a major contribution to improving the five main capabilities of modern warfare – protection, lethality, command and control as well as mobility and sustainment. Rheinmetall’s goal is a well-protected soldier, equipped with integrated weapons, with a clear picture of the tactical situation and reliable means of communication.

Rheinmetall soldier systems improve performance in all five capability areas without overburdening the individual rifleman. The system is modular, resulting in reduced volume, weight and power consumption. This ensures greater operational flexibility and the ability to quickly adapt to new situations and mission requirements. The equipment is easy to use even under harsh conditions and in stressful combat situations when performance and low weight are paramount.

Turkey and UAE develop Rabdan new 8x8 armoured vehicle for United Arab Emirates army.

At the International Defense Exhibition IDEX, the Turkish Company Otokar has signed a foreign partnership with United Arab Emirates (UAE) to produce and sell 400 8x8 armored vehicles worth $661 million. The contract will be overtaken by the Al Jasoor Heavy Vehicles Industries, a joint company established by Otokar and Tawazun. At IDEX 2017, Tawazun has displayed the Rabdan, the new 8x8 armoured vehicle is based on the Turkish-made Otokar Arma wheeled vehicle.

At the booth of Tawazun in the outside exhibition area of IDEX 2017, the UAE Company Al Jasoor Heavy Vehicles Industries has presented for the first time a prototype of the Rabdan 8x8 armoured in Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) configuration.

The Rabdan was fitted with a two-man turret similar to the Russian-made BMP-3 tracked armoured infantry vehicle which is also in service with the UAE armed forces. The BMP-3 turret is armed one 100mm 2A70 semi-automatic rifled gun / missile launcher, which is stabilized in two axes and can fire either 3UOF HE-FRAG rounds or 3UBK10 anti-tank guided missiles. Second armament includes one 30 mm 2A72 coaxial cannon and one 7.62 mm PKT coaxial machine gun.
Some few years ago, the UAE armed forces has launched a request for a new combat vehicle to replace theBMP-3 with a more mobile 8x8 armoured vehicle. The UAE is the largest international military operator of BMP-3 IFV. Between 1992 and 2000 around 600 BMP-3s were delivered to UAE.
According first specifications released by the UAE Company Al Jasoor Heavy Vehicles Industries, the Rabdan has the capacity to carried a total 12 military personnel including driver and commander. It has gross vehicle weight (GVW) from 28,000 kg to 30,000 kg.

IDEX 2017: NIMR signs massive contracts with UAE for over 1,750 armoured vehicles

NIMR Automotive, a subsidiary of Emirates Defense Industries Company (EDIC), the UAE's integrated defence manufacturing and services platform, today Feb. 23 announced that the UAE Armed Forces intends to award three new contracts to NIMR for over 1,750 armoured vehicles.

NIMR will deliver 1,500 JAIS 4x4 and 6x6 infantry fighting vehicles, as well as more than 150 HAFEET 630A artillery support vehicles in both Observation and Command and Control configurations and 115 AJBAN 440A vehicles equipped with anti-tank guided missile systems to the UAE Armed Forces from 2018.

The announcement, which occurred during the final day of the International Defense Exhibition and Conference (IDEX) in Abu Dhabi wraps a highly successful show for NIMR that saw the company unveil its most advanced vehicle platforms – the JAIS 6x6 and the Rapid Intervention Vehicle - as well as sign a new Strategic Cooperation Agreement with Czech manufacturer VOP CZ for the marketing, distribution, production and after-sale support of the complete range of NIMR armoured vehicles to the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary.

Marking the announcement, Dr. Fahad Saif Harhara, CEO of NIMR, said: "We are delighted and proud to have been selected to support the UAE Armed Forces expand its capability with our best-in-class military vehicles and technology. These vehicles sit at the cutting edge of military technology, combining our proven platforms integrated with complex mission equipment. These agreements represent an important milestone in our company's history."

Formerly the N35, the JAIS - named after the UAE's Jebel Jais mountain in Ras Al Khaimah - is a mine-protected, multi-purpose fighting vehicle, which features 60% greater protected space and payload capacity over traditional designs. It can support troops deployed on multi-day missions with a full suite of weapons, ammunition and rations. Crew survivability is centred around the combat-proven "crew citadel", protecting against a full range of threats.

The evolving nature of asymmetric warfare and prolific use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) and Explosively Formed Projectiles (EFP) has driven the evolution of the MRAP vehicle; specifically, the need for increased ballistic protection whilst maintaining mobility. The vehicles represent this evolution and places NIMR at the forefront of modern MRAP design.

An additional feature that sets JAIS apart from the competition is its modularity, as it supports multiple mission variants on the same platform, including: an infantry fighting vehicle, APC, ambulance, command and control, engineering and recovery.

"The UAE's decision to expand its current fleet of NIMR-made vehicles is testament to the standards and increased capability our products. The JAIS, HAFEET and AJBAN range are combat-proven and will continue to protect lives of our soldiers on the battlefield,'' Dr. Fahad Harhara added.

The vehicles will be produced at NIMR's new 37,500sq/m facility, the largest military vehicle manufacturing facility in the Middle East and North Africa. The vehicles were selected for their high-mobility and advanced protection elements which enhance crew survivability against attacks from roadside IEDs, anti-tank mines and ballistic threats.

IDEX 2017: Lacroix Showcased its SYLENA MK2 Multiple Decoy Launcher for the 1st Time in the UAE

Lacroix was showcasing an actual SYLENA MK2 Decoy Launcher on its stand at IDEX 2017.

Sylena MK2 IN multiple decoy launcher fitted on the BR71 Baynunah MK2 corvette scale by CMN at NAVDEX 2017.

SYLENA MK2 decoy launcher for the first time in the Emirates. It is a multiple decoy launcher designed to deploy three types of ammunitions: SEALEM, SEALIR and CANTO

SEALEM is a corner reflector Radio-Frequency (RF) decoy: It is design to match the ship's RF signature to challenge advanced missile's CCM. It is able to defeat generic and emerging threats as well as multi-missile salvoes.

SEALIR is a morphologic Infra Red (IR) spectral decoy: It is design to match the ship's IR signature. It is capable of defeating the full range of traditional and modern IR seekers as well as the latest generation of imaging IR seekers.

CANTO (by DCNS) is an all in one broadband active acoustic emitter acting both as a jammer for dilution effect and as a false target generator for confusion effect. The extremely confused tactical picture forces the attacking torpedo(es) to waste time and energy finding the real target.

Navy Recognition reported last year during DIMDEX 2016 that the Egyptian Navy became the first customer of the SYLENA MK2, when it selected the system for its future Gowind corvettes

The Jobaria MCRL and TCL can be used for close fire support as well as striking and suppressing hostile targets.
According to Al Jaber Land Systems, the new Jobaria TCL will soon be bought by a Middle Eastern country.

Czech team unveils CANTAS E

The second member of the CANTAS (CANnard TAil Sitter) unmanned aircraft system (UAS) family has been unveiled at IDEX 2017 in Abu Dhabi.

Designated CANTAS E (Endurance), the new system follows the launch of the CANTAS A (Advanced) at the Indo Defence 2016 exhibition in November 2016.
The aircraft were developed by the Czech Republic's Krill Design and New Space technologies. They feature a triangular wing form with the CANTAS A having a span of 3.3 m and measuring 2.4 m long; the CANTAS E has a larger wing span of 5 m and a higher aspect ratio wing.
The aircraft are designed to operate independently of infrastructure, being able to take-off and land vertically, and maintain hover.

Pantsir-M Naval Air Defense Missile/Gun System to Enter Service with Russian Navy Before Year-End

first class of vessel to be fitted with Pantsir-M will likely be the Project 22800 (code Karakut) Corvette

A navalized Pantsir anti-air gun/missile system (Pantsir-M) will have entered service before the end of the year, Dmitry Konoplyov, dual-hatted as director general of High-Precision Systems and managing director of the Instrument Design Bureau (KBP), has told TASS at the 13th IDEX international arms show (IDEX 2017).

The Pantsir’s ship-borne version can pack the missile used by the baseline Pantsir-S1 (SA-22 Greyhound) land-based SPAAGM system and the future Germes-K surface-to-air missile (SAM) that can be guided to the target by an unmanned aerial vehicle. According to KBP, the Pantsir-M is to replace the Kortik (SA-N-11 Grison) SAM system.

The Pantsir-M is based on the land based Pantsir-S1, but has a different artillery system- as can be seen on the above pictures, including two GSh-6-30K / AO-18KD 30mm six-barrel guns as found on the Kasthtan CIWS. Pantsir-M also comes with an additional radar system, separate from the one fitted ontop of the turret itself.

China's CSSC Unveiled the Type 730C Dual Gun and Missile CIWS

During IDEX-NAVDEX, held from 19th to 23rd February in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, Chinese company CSSC (China Shipbuilding Trading Co. Ltd.) unveiled the Type 730C dual gun and missile close in weapon system (CIWS). It combines the existing Type 730 seven-barrelled 30 mm Gatling gun system (Chinese Navy designation: H/PJ12) with 6x FL-3000N (Flying Leopard 3000 Naval missile, Chinese Navy designation: AJK-10 or HQ-10).

According to a CSSC video, one set of fire control system uniformly manages missiles and ship borne guns to alternately hit incoming targets. SAM can work in conjunction with the guns to cope with two batches of incoming targets in order to enhance the capability of resisting saturation attacks

Each 730C system comes with LR66 tracking radar and OC8 electro-optical tracker which can track and calculate two separate targets (fire on one, keep track of the other) at the same time. Contrary to exhisiting Type 730, these two sensors are not fitted on the CIWS on the new Type 730C variant (probably due to weight and EM interferences issues with the missiles). The whole system also comes with the SR64A search radar.

A single WCC-03 fire control console located in the ship CIC is used to control the Type 730C. There are also two associated cabinets: One for testing and training, the other being a "multifunctional exchange equipment"

Type 730C performance:

As provided by CSSC:

Gun ammunition capacity: 2x drums of 500 rounds each.

Three modes of gun firing rate: 4000 rd/min - 2000 rd/min and 1000 rd/min

Gun effective range: 2500 meters against missile (using APDS), 3500 meters against aircraft (using HE) and 5000 meters against surface targets (using HE).

Interception range: 1400 to 150 meters against missiles; 3500 to 150 meters against aircraft.

The system reaction time between receiving whole ship target designation data and the gun pointing to the target ballistic point is less than 6 second for the LR66 tracking radar channel and less than 6.5 seconds for the OC8 electro-optical channel.

Target processing capability: about 32 targets.

Threat displaying capability: about 8 targets

Interception envelope of guns: 150 meters to 2500 meters

Interception envelope of missiles: 2000 meters to 8000 meters

LR66 Radar detecting range:

Against air target of 2m² RCS: about 16 Km

Against surface target: Visual Range

Against sea skimming target 0.1m² RCS: about 6 Km

OC8 Operational range:

Under the conditions of visibillity not less than 23.5 Km, environmental temperature not more than 25°c, relative humidity not more than 80%:

The operational range against 2m² RCS target is not less than 14Km and not less than 7Km against 0.1m² RCS target.

The "Silent Hunter" anti-drone laser AIR

According to the presentation, the "Silent Hunter" laser, also known as LASS, identifies, tracks and destroys drones measuring less than 2 meters in diameter and flying at least 60 meters per second up to 4,000 meters Of altitude.
The system is able to regulate its power - 5 kW, 10 kW, 20 kW and 30 kW - and pull depending on the size and range of the targets. According to the staff of Poly, the laser can "pierce" 5 steel plates with a thickness of 2 mm each at a distance of 800 meters, or a plate of 5 mm to 1,000 meters. The weapon can re-engage a new target every 6 seconds.
A more powerful version is currently in development against new target types such as mortar shells or rockets

Note that Chinese companies now offer other "soft" anti-drone solutions, most of which involve blurring Air-Sol communication between the drone and its owner, forcing the drone to land or land 'to crush. We discussed some of them a month ago in the dossier " China is multiplying the means to fight illegal drones ". Henri K.
