DCI achieves training of first crews for Egyptian FREMM frigate and amphibious assault ships
Working under contract to DCNS, DCI has trained the first crew for the Tahya Misr FREMM multi-mission frigate and the first two crews for the Gamal Abdel Nasser and Anouar-El-Sadat amphibious assault ships, the French company announced during Euronaval 2016 exhibition.
he DCI group assumed responsibility for training the Egyptian crews of the multi-mission frigate and the two amphibious assault ships acquired by Cairo in 2015. These ships are modern but complex. DCI, in cooperation with the French Navy, supported the Egyptian Navy for several months as the crews underwent familiarisation with the ships and learned how to operate them safely.

Hull Vane's fuel-saving system showcased for the first time at Euronaval 2016
Recent research has shown a significant improvement of the comfort, safety and operability in waves of OPVs, corvettes and frigates. The reduction in propulsion power, propeller loading and stern wave also has a positive influence on the ship’s underwater noise signature. Helicopter and drone operations are made safer by reducing the vertical and horizontal accelerations of the helo-deck when sailing in waves.
The Hull Vane system is a fixed hydrofoil positioned below or behind a ship's transom. It modifies the vessel's stern wave pattern and generates hydrodynamic lift with a forward component. This reduces the siph's resistance and dampens the pitching, heaving, rolling, and yawing.
This system is particularly effective when used on relatively high speed vessels, or expressed in naval terms at Froud numbers between 0.2 and 0.7. For a 50 m vessel, this equates to a speed range between 8 and 30 knots. Similarly, for 100 m and 200 m vessels, this equates to minimum speed of 12 and 17 knots respectively.

Thales announces the launch of its new compact CAPTAS-4 towed array sonar at Euronaval 2016
The new product is a compact, modular version of the CAPTAS-4 fourring sonar. It requires less room on board the vessel, in particular because it incorporates an optimised deployment and recovery system for the towed array.
The compact version of CAPTAS-4 delivers the same detection performance as CAPTAS-4 with 20% weight reduction and a 50% smaller footprint. In addition, the compact version can be containerised, making it the only product of its kind that can be moved from ship to ship to maximize operational effectiveness.
By making the world's most capable sonar available to surface fleets as a compact, modular, ready-to-deploy system, Thales has once again demonstrated its ability to innovate to meet new the operational requirements of naval forces. The compact version of the CAPTAS-4 provides an ASW capability that creates high operational value at relatively low cost.
Any frigate equipped with the new CAPTAS-4 compact will have the same collaborative anti-submarine warfare capabilities as a destroyer.
Thales is proposing to supply compact versions of CAPTAS-4 to the French Navy under the FTI (Frégate de Taille Intermédiaire) programme, which was officially unveiled by the defence ministry at Euronaval 2016.

Cambridge Pixel enhances Radar Tracking Software to support small target detection
Richard Warren, Cambridge Pixel's director of software said: "Radar sensors are offering more capabilities to detect targets of interest, but targets of interest are getting smaller and more agile, so advances in software processing are a key part of the overall detection solution.
"With our enhanced target tracking software combining a multi-hypothesis approach with this multi-model capability, small and weak targets can now be detected and tracked even in cluttered environments. Our software is highly flexible and can work with a wide range of commercial and military radars to assist our customers in providing effective security and to combat an increase in terrorism, smuggling, piracy and insurgency."
Cambridge Pixel's SPx radar tracking software is designed to operate with many different radar types and is already widely deployed in command and control, maritime navigation, security, airports and vessel traffic applications.
The C-SHARP hull has proved unequalled global performances:
- Autonomy increased by 10 to 30% thanks to significantly reduced resistance, especially at patrol speed
- Excellent seakeeping behaviour with 10 to 20% gain in accelerations
- Unequalled capacity to safely operate on-board equipment with approximately 20% reduction of wake and aft peak vertical accelerations as well as reduced relative movements between the ship and launched equipment

The C-SHARP concept is currently being deployed on Kership vessels range and especially on coastal patrol vessels (CPV 25 and CPV 32) as well as high sea patrol vessels (OPV 45, OPV 52 and OPV 58). It is also perfectly adapted to modernization requirements on existing vessels (stern).

It is the ideal system for a broad range of critical missions. It is perfectly suited to surveillance and maritime police operations, but also interception and self-defence operations in the face of constantly evolving asymmetric threats.
NARWHAL20 is a fully stabilized remotely controlled naval weapon station. It is the fruit of Nexter Systems innovation and expertise in medium caliber cannons, gun mounts and turrets for both fixed and rotor wing aircraft as well as for naval vessels. French Company NBC-Sys presents naval applications of CBRN protection systems at Euronaval 2016 NBC-Sys, a subsidiary of leading European land defense company Nexter, is at the Euronaval trade show, presenting the naval applications of its acknowledged expertise in protecting against CBRN (chemical, bacteriological, radiological and nuclear) threats.
At a time when the threat of nuclear, bacteriological and chemical attacks is widespread, NBC-Sys is designing and producing various air filtration systems, particularly for latest-generation ships around the world and the French navy's FREMM frigates.
This year, on the Nexter stand, NBC-Sys is exhibiting a marine filtration system with capacity of 2400m3/h, representative of those used on FREMM frigates, and a 300 m3/h NBC filter that forms part of those systems and is designed to be used against chemical warfare agents and particles using the "Citadelle" concept. The system overpressurises the vessel's living quarters by pumping in purified air. The quantity of air is sufficient to counteract the dynamic pressure of the air on the walls and to maintain a good level of physiological comfort for long periods.
